Lao People’s Democratic Republic Joins the Madrid Protocol
On 7 December 2015, the government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol for the International Registration of Marks. The treaty enters into force in Lao People’s Democratic Republic on 7 March 2016. After this date, Lao People’s Democratic Republic will become the 97th member of the Madrid System (you can read about the 96th member Gambia in our earlier post here), and will bring the total coverage of the Madrid System to 113 territories. In addition, any existing international trade mark holders will be able to add Lao People’s Democratic Republic to their International Registration as a ‘subsequent designation’ after this date. The Madrid System is cost effective and administratively efficient process that allows an applicant to apply for a trade mark in various countries by filing one international application. It offers increasing opportunities for brand owners of all sizes and industry sectors to develop and protect their trade marks in global markets. For any brand owners interested in securing multi-national trade mark protection, the Madrid System is a must when devising a filing program. Stobbs can assist with all aspects of strategic and cost effective advice relating to international filings, global brand expansion plans and enforcement.
