Sport Relief – Trade Marks and Charitable Organisations

Sport Relief, a biennial charity event from Comic Relief (a British charity established in 1985), combines sport and entertainment to raise money. This year, tens of thousands of participants swam, ran and slammed over the weekend, with the BBC reporting over £56 million raised to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world's poorest countries

The role of trade marks in charitable organisations deserves a quick mention here. A cursory search reveals that Comic Relief Limited owns UK, CTM and International registrations for the trade marks COMIC RELIEF and SPORT RELIEF.

This goes to highlight the importance of  trade mark registrations for charitable organisations, particularly if they are involved in fundraising activities. A charity which owns a trade mark registration will likely be able to prevent unrelated charities from using or registering an identical or similar trade mark which could cause confusion with the former charity. For some charitable organisations, such confusion may well mean that donations or volunteers go elsewhere. In addition, a charity with a strong brand and reputation is likely to be viewed by the public as being more trustworthy, leading to more support.
