There has recent been a reform in relation to designs in the European Union.
Registered Community Designs - shortened to RCDs but an arcane term to our lay clients - are going to be renamed Registered EU Designs as part of these changes.
One of the other changes taking place sees renewal fees increase. A dull topic, but we all like saving money, right?
The fee changes come into play on 1 May 2025 and are as follows:
Current fee | New fee | Increase | |
First period of renewal | €90 | €150 | 67% |
Second period of renewal | €120 | €250 | 108% |
Third period of renewal | €150 | €400 | 167% |
Fourth period of renewal | €180 | €700 | 289% |
While not all designs will get to their fourth period of renewal, that increase is particularly eye watering.
If, however, you have an EU design due for renewal up until 31 October 2025, if we renew this before the end of April, we can take advantage of the lower fees.
We will be going through our cases due up until the end of October where we have positive instructions and will file the renewal requests early. If you haven’t provided us with instructions yet, please don’t delay!
If you’re an IP professional in another country, you would be wise to check your docket for any EU designs due up until 31 October 2025. Of course, we’d be very happy to help with any renewals.
