Big in Japan? Then Register your Trade Mark with MIPRO by 30 June 2016

The window for foreign brand owners to record their brand in Japan’s Manufactured Imports and Investment Promotion Organization (MIPRO) directory is now open until 30 June 2016.

The Directory (a catalogue of brand names shared among Customs Offices, police and other administrative bodies) is a low cost way to increase trade mark detection and brand enforcement, reduce the number of counterfeits imported into Japan and is a potentially useful tool in trade mark prosecution cases where a brand owner needs to assert the fame of its trademarks.

In order to register, a brand owner will simply need to provide details of their Japanese trade mark registrations (it is not available to pending applications), including trade mark name (if applicable), registration number and local business contact information (if any, or contact details of a chosen local attorney). Brand owners will then be provided with a copy of the catalogue at the end of the year.

Custom recordal facilities such as these are welcomed and are increasingly becoming invaluable ways for brand owners to get added value from their trade mark portfolios. Stobbs has significant experience in brand enforcement programs, including anti-counterfeiting and online takedowns.
