Straight Up Facts

Thank you to Joel McDonald for this month’s brand fact – the first of 2020.

As many of you know, non-traditional trade marks (such as colour, shape, sound etc.) are notoriously difficult to obtain.  However, Boise State University was able to obtain a US trade mark registration for a blue coloured American football field or, as its affectionately known, the “Smurf Turf”.  The original blue turf was installed in 1986, making Boise State University the first school to have a non-green field.  However, the trade mark wasn’t applied for until September 2008, and wasn’t registered until 10 November 2009.  This mark is still registered today and can be found on the US Trade Mark register under trade mark number 3707623.
